The Personal Project platform allows students all over the world to choose a topic of their preference , identify a problem and come up with a viable solution to mitigate the issue. The Personal Project requires students to write a 3500 word report on their chosen topic/problem and evalaute the limitations associated with their created product .
Through this Personal Project journey I was effectively able to explore and venture out to my various intrests. Furthermore, I was able to evaluate and understand the various problems we face today.
REFLECTING ON HOW COMPLETING THE PROJECT HAS EXTENDED THE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE GLOBAL CONTEXT AND TOPIC: -
Through the completion of the project, I personally feel it allowed me to improve and develop new skills along with exploring my passion to critically think and create potential solutions to solve one of the crises the world faces today. The project also allowed me to explore my interests and use my prior knowledge from the summer course I did on Biotechnology from the Harvard Medical School. This project allowed me to expand my knowledge in the subjects of Biology and Chemistry, especially in the concept of understanding how the properties of the ingredients affects the biodegradability of a material.
Furthermore, the chosen Global Context of Globalization and sustainability was well imbursed in the project as it facilitated my knowledge and understanding accordingly. By always trying to think in a manner that ensures the safety of our earth and how sustainable the Bioplastic material would be on a global scale. Moreover, I was curious to understand which material/product is the most commonly used when it comes to causing harm to the environment around us. After extensive re-search and evaluating the reliability of those sources, I was able to justify as to why an alternative material is essential and through creating a product (PPE, Face shields) with that Bioplastic material, which is a wide contributor to environmental damage.

REFLECTION AS AN IB LEARNER: -
I showcased multiple IB learner profiles through my Personal Project journey. Although in particular I developed the IB profiles of being Caring and as an Inquirer. Before the project I did not have much of knowledge about the effects of our everyday practices on our environment .Through re-search and understanding the vast effects of human practices such as pollution I had developed the IB profile of “Caring” which motivated me to find solutions to combat such issues. Moreover, through the personal project I had developed a sense of showing curiosity which allowed me to inquire about the limitations of my product and ideas.
Caring
The term caring as described by the IB refers to “They show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.” (Baccalaureate, 2021) This IB learner profile evidently is related to the overall goal of the project. This is because the project revolves around finding a solution to an evident problem the world faces today. By displaying the IB profile of “Caring” I was able to create a solution to “make a positive difference” to the people around me and to the environment. By being caring towards other’s needs. It brings in a sense of satisfaction and gratitude for being able to contribute to the society. Although the process of identifying and devising a viable solution to an evident issue was challenging , it allowed me to showcase my nature/personality to help others and love for the eco-system.
Inquirer
To start this project, it was essential that intensive re-search and understanding is needed in the process. By showing the IB learner profile of the Inquirer, as described by the IB “They develop their natural curiosity. They acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research and show independence in learning. They actively enjoy learning, and this love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives.” (Baccalaureate, 2021) I was able to explore my curiosity in the lines of understanding the potential of Bioplastic. To effectively understand the limitations associated with the existing alternatives and independently trying to find solutions to combat the issues. This is to improve its efficacy in terms of introducing an eco-friendly material with lowered environmental damage for consumer and industrial use. Furthermore, throughout the re- search and development phase I was able to be an inquirer to try and find ways to solve the challenges which came my way.
