The world is constantly developing, resulting in increased Sales and Distribution of goods especially in the e-commerce and medical industries. This results in an exponential requirement for packaging materials such as plastic, a non-biodegradable material, which is also used for the production of PPE equipment. “Production (of plastic) increased exponentially, from 2.3 million tons in 1950 to 448 million tons by 2015 and production is expected to double by 2050” (Parker). We all know that the increase in use of such types of materials can have disastrous effects on the environment. Results in the spread of deadly toxins and its effects on global warming. Although the question is still to be answered, What have we done to prevent this? How much has this affected our environment? Are there any alternatives ?
My disciplinary interests lie in the field of Biology ;therefore, I believed that this was an amazing opportunity to showcase my knowledge in this field via the Personal Project. This project allowed me to showcase my interests and utilize my skills to create a suitable product to solve the issue. Goal- To conduct extensive research into current methods of production of biodegradable materials with the main aim to introduce an environmentally friendly material called Bioplastic, which is designed to be starch-based. Achieving this goal was extremely challenging as the creation of Bioplastic was time consuming. This is because I had to conduct multiple experiments to create a final product that adheres to the best specification in the following criteria: Material & Aesthetics, Functionality, Eco-Friendliness and Material Manufacturing Ability. Another aspect of my personal project is to investigate the effects of non-biodegradable materials, like synthetic plastic and polystyrene on the environment. My main purpose of choosing this topic was to promote the use of bioplastic for consumer use as well as the production of PPE equipment, specifically to manufacture face shields to assist in reducing the harmful effects of medical waste on the environment. Having never create a product that requires a lot of understanding, I conducted detailed primary and secondary research for the creation of the product. I also critically evaluated the efficiency and limitations of existing methods of reducing plastic pollution and took them into consideration when creating the Bioplastic material.
Prior to finalizing the topic for the Personal Project, I read an article on “Plastic Pollution” by a reputable organization named ‘Our World In Data’ . This source mainly focused on the effects of plastic on the environment that was measured on a global scale which sparked my interest and led me to choose this topic as an evident problem/issue which I was passionate to solve. I was able to apply the concepts that I learnt in MYP Biology and Chemistry in this project which tremendously helped in the creation of my final product.
My product is streamlined to solve a prevalent issue the world is facing today. Thus, it is imperative that all the highest product specifications are met for all the four criterions in order to create the best product. Analyzing the success criteria with respect to all the subjects in the MYP program, I was able to derive the categories in which my final product would be evaluated: Material and Aesthetics, Functionality, Eco-friendly and Material Manufacturing Ability. These set of specifications were chosen as I felt these are the most relevant factors which I should keep in mind during the creation of the product
